Sussex County Master Gardeners invite you to visit their Demonstration Garden during several free events held throughout the year. The Demonstration Garden is a labor of love, designed, planted, and maintained by dedicated Master Gardener volunteers. The garden is available for informal walk-through tours during outside workshops, and also during scheduled events such as “A Day in the Garden,” usually held in July, and several walking tours that focus on theme or particular blooming period. All plants are clearly marked with their common names and Latin binomials. Plants native to Delaware are always clearly marked.

The blue and gold tent, seen center right, is often the venue for outdoor workshops. Under the shade, volunteers and workshop visitors can learn how to make hypertufa containers, examine tools that make gardening more accessible, or learn the difference between a beneficial insect and a pest. The Demonstration Garden is also the stage for several garden walks that are planned throughout the growing season and provide an opportunity for the public to enjoy leisurely strolls and informal, yet informational conversations with Master Gardeners. Can I really grow vegetables in one square foot?  Can we enjoy gardening without bending over?  What grows best in Delaware in the shade or full sun? What is the variety of this hydrangea? Watch this amazing space as it evolves throughout the season, there is something interesting to observe almost every month! Bring your camera! Capture a swallowtail butterfly as it dances among an array of color and nectar. Little hands and feet are welcomed. Our children’s garden offers many sensory plants and objects to see, touch and smell. Crawl inside a bean teepee. Meet some caricatures who sport the best in potted plant couture!

The Demonstration Garden is located at the Sussex County Extension Office in Georgetown. The Sussex County Extension Office is located at 16483 County Seat Highway, Route 9, west of Georgetown, Delaware. During spring through fall – look for the blue and gold tent in the Sussex County Demonstration Garden immediately behind the office building. Click here for detailed directions to the Sussex County Extension Office!
