The Kent County Master Gardeners are planning a series of workshops for the community from March through May. Classes are held at the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Office, Paradee Center, 69 Transportation Circle, Dover, unless otherwise stated. Backyard Sweet Potatoes
Monday, June 4, 2018 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the U.D. Paradee Center
Have you ever thought of growing your own sweet potatoes? Sweet potatoes are very easy to grow in small spaces – in the home garden, raised beds, or even containers! Join Kent Master Gardener Debbie Nicol, who will take you through the process, from propagation to planting to harvesting, storing, and cooking, including recipes and nutritional information.
A Family Garden: Planning, Planting & Growing a Vegetable Garden with Young Children
Wednesday, July 18, 2018 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at the U.D. Paradee Center
Parents, grandparents and other adults will learn strategies to plan, plant, and maintain a vegetable garden for young children. Participants will learn how to integrate simple learning activities to actively engage children in planning and designing the garden, planting young seedlings, and caring for the vegetables. Shared resources include books to read, suggestions for simple games to play, and suggestions to integrate math and science while working in the garden. NOTE: this workshop is also appropriate for preschool teachers an home school educators. This workshop is not for children to attend.
Preserving Flowers – Part 1
Wednesday, August 1, 2018 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at U.D. Paradee Center
Summer is the time for flowers. Join Kent Master Gardener Bev Gemmill, who will discuss and demonstrate some ways to preserve flowers for use in winter. Participants will learn why each drying technique is best for different flowers and which are best for pressing. Handouts will be available to help participants prepare for Part 2.
Using Your Dried Flowers – Part 2
Monday, August 20, 2018 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. U.D. Paradee Center Fee – $5 Limit – 20 participants
Participants must have attended Preserving Flowers – Part 1 and will now use their flowers in arrangements. this hands-on workshop will require participants to bring their flowers and sharp scissors or pruners. Workshop is limited to 20 participants.
