Kent County Master Gardener Winter Workshops

The Kent County Master Gardeners are planning a series of workshops for the community from January through February. Classes are held at the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Office, Paradee Center, 69 Transportation Circle, Dover, unless otherwise stated.  Contact the Extension Office at 302-730-4000 to register. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the U.D. Paradee Center  

Join Master Gardener, Bev Gemmill, to learn about spring ephemerals. Ephemeral means lasting for only a brief time usually in reference to insects or flowers. Join this workshop and learn about flowering spring ephemerals, their bloom time and where to look for them. You will leave with lots of information that will amaze your fiends on a woods walk in the springtime. You too will be able to say here today and gone tomorrow.

Claude E. Phillips Herbarium – Free

Friday, February 16, 2018  2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Delaware State University Herbarium

The Claude E. Phillips Herbarium, located at Delaware State university, is the only public herbarium on the Delmarva peninsula. It is a botanical resource center that houses a diverse collection of more than 210,000 plant materials from around the world. In this event, Dr. Cynthia Hong-Wa, curator, will share the functions of the Herbarium and provide an overview of the scientific collections that include mounted plant specimens dating back to 1799. Participants will also receive an exclusive look at other collections that highlight the importance of plants in general.

Time to Multiply Greenery – Propagation Workshop – Free

Wednesday, February 21, 2018  1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Delaware State University Greenhouse

Spring is a great time to start plants or nurture them in readiness for the growing season. During this workshop, Dr. Rose Ogutu, DSU Horticulture Specialist, will explore the many ways that we use to propagate plants. Participants will learn the basic principles for propagation. Together, we will explore the best way one can determine how best to propagate a plant that one might not be familiar with. Feel free to bring plant materials that you would wish to propagate.
