On Saturday, June 8, 2013, from 9 to 11 a.m. Bennett Orchards will host an Educational Meeting and Field Tour on the commercial production of blueberries.
This meeting will be a great opportunity to tour the eight-acre blueberry planting at Bennett Orchards in Frankford, Del. and hear from Hail Bennett about his experiences establishing a commercial blueberry planting.
Gordon Johnson, UD Extension vegetable specialist and Emmalea Ernest, Extension agent, will be on hand to discuss recommendations and research on establishment practices and variety selection.
“Blueberries have unusual production requirements, but offer many potential marketing opportunities for growers,” says Emmalea Ernest. “The plantings we have established for research and education purposes at Bennett Orchards and UD’s Georgetown farm will help Delaware growers to be successful with this crop. There is a grwoing interest in blueberries from farmers and consumers and we are excited about more blueberries being grown in Delaware.”
Joanne Whalen, IPM specialist at UD will provide the latest information on Spotted Wing Drosophila management.
Please preregister by emailing Karen Adams or call at (302) 856-2585 ext 540.
Refreshments will be served. The workshop and tour is free.
